CARIBCERT

History

CARIBCERT was developed by the Caribbean Tourism Credentialing Program, (CTCP), a regional project and jointly funded by the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank and the CHA. The objective of CARIBCERT was and still  is to increase the level of professionalism in the industry and thus to increase the competitive position of the Caribbean tourism and hospitality industry. The SHTA along with the University of St. Martin launched  a pilot program of  the CARIBCERT standardization and certification program  in 2003 on St. Maarten for an initial group of workers employed as room attendants, from there.

Program Description

CARIBCERT is a standards and certification system built by and for the tourism and hospitality industry in the Caribbean. This system assesses and certifies the competence of individuals according to standards established for 50 occupations in the food and beverage, housekeeping, and front office functions of hotel operations.

Having a CARIBCERT certification means an individual has demonstrated the knowledge and professionalism that employers need and value. The program is based on standards that describe the skills and knowledge people in an occupation need in order to provide superior customer service. When you know the standard for an occupation and can demonstrate the skills described, then you can be certified. The introduction of standards will benefit local and visiting consumers and increase satisfaction within the hospitality and tourism industries.

The SHTA feels that CARIBCERT  is an extremely valuable tool towards continued product development. The program will stimulate and enhance the economic climate on the island and be a valuable tool for entrepreneurs that seek a confirmation and/or guarantee of the skill and knowledge level of current and prospective employees.
