The SHTA has been requested by the Minister of Labor to produce a position paper on the use of Short Term Contracts.
In short the position of the SHTA is as follows:
Short Term Contracts continue to be an important employment tool for the business sector on St. Maarten for among others:
o Seasonality
o Specific short term projects
Short Term Contracts are used in many countries and continue to be very useful. The removal of short-term contracts would be difficult and very restrictive to the employment market.
Main Point
Short-term contracts need to continue to exist, however, the abuse of short-term contracts should not be allowed and needs to be controlled by the Labor Department.
Do you agree with this position? Do you believe short term contracts are necessary for the industry to be able to deal with the seasonality of the industry? Do you use short term contracts for other purposes? Do see short term contracts being abused by some employers?
